If you have decided to go into the nursing field or if you are just considering going into this field, you should realize that there is more than one type of nursing.  Different nurses decide what area of nursing to choose in different ways.  Here are some of the ways that you can decide what area of nursing to go into.

Interest

This is an easy way to decide what type of nursing you want to go into.  What are you interested in?  Do you like working with patients of certain ages?  Do you enjoy any one setting over another like an emergency room over an operating room?  Or is there any type of nursing that you definitely want to avoid?  All of these questions can either help you to choose the type of nursing that you want to go into or at least eliminate some options to narrow down your decision.

Comfort Level

What type of nursing would you be comfortable with?  Perhaps some classes in nursing school covered skills that you are more or less comfortable with so you may want to steer towards or away from types of nursing that rely heavily on these skills.  Also, what type of environment are you comfortable with?  Nurses work in many settings so sometimes it is easier to decide what type of setting you would like to work in and then work backwards to the type of nursing that would be used in that setting.

Personality

Do you like an environment that is hectic and constantly throwing challenges at you or do you prefer an environment that is slightly more predictable?  In short, what type of nursing is your personality suited to?  Not every setting that nurses work in is filled with constant crises so decide if you want this high stress environment.  Some nurses thrive with emergencies happening all the time while others cannot stand this type of nursing.  What type of nursing fits your natural temperament?

Career Goals

Examining your career goals is good too.  It does not matter what your career goals happen to be as long as you look at what they are and you look at what types of nursing will be able to help you achieve them.  For some individuals trying to decide what type of nursing to go into, career goals could be a big help in making the final decision while for others these goals may not help at all.  Just make sure the type of nursing you pick and your career goals match up.

Availability

Sometimes you just end up going with whatever openings there are.  There is nothing wrong with this especially if you haven’t made a clear choice anyway.

When deciding what type of nursing to go into just try to pick the one that will make you happy.  That’s all you can do.  And remember that no one will blame you if you later decide that maybe a different type of nursing would be better for you.
